SAN FRANCISCO, May 05, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Synerise, an AI-first behavioral data platform headquartered in Poland, closed a $23 million Series B round led by Carpathian Partners, a CEE-focused technology investment fund. The round included a primary capital raise and a secondary share acquisition and was joined by several prominent business angels. The purpose of the round is to fund Synerise's expansion into the US market and the continued investment into the company's deep-tech behavioral data processing, AI & process automation platform.

Synerise addresses many of the key challenges of modern behavioral data operations by combining real-time heterogeneous data collection and analytics, with automated and AI-enhanced decisions and instant use case implementation/deployment into live business environments. Synerise proposition stands in contrast to how enterprises tend to work with behavioral big data, which often includes expensive technology stacks with multiple disparate systems and applications from multiple vendors, resulting in chaotic system architecture, data silos, security risks, and excessive human resources required to staff these operations. Consequently, enterprise data ecosystems rarely operate in real time, despite low latency claims from individual point-solution vendors.
Synerise is solving these problems. Its end-to-end platform provides one environment where most enterprise business processes can be managed from. Some of the many use-cases possible through Synerise include individualized product recommendations, content management, loyalty systems, marketing automation, predictive analytics, scoring & propensity models, churn prevention, NPS measurement, fraud prevention, pricing optimization, and hyper-segmentation, all working seamlessly across the web, mobile apps or even physical channels (e.g. a PoS). Real-time execution - within under a second from the triggering event, through data queries, analytics, decisions, and automated deployment - is possible due to the unmatched speed of Synerise's purpose-built proprietary database technology, Terrarium.
"Our vision is to always be in real-time mode, no matter how much data you need to process. We have created, from scratch, a column & row-oriented real-time behavioral database engine for heterogeneous multi-modal data ingestion, which powers our platform. It enables the daily handling of billions of requests responsible for enterprise-level decisions, without any pre-aggregations or dividing data into hot and cold storage for separate analytical and transactional operations. This gives us a competitive advantage in building highly effective out-of-the-box AI models with self-optimization" commented Jarosław Królewski, the CEO and co-founder of Synerise.

Jacek Dąbrowski, the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer at Synerise, added: "We manage model agnostic features for real-time inference and batch Machine Learning applications. Our solution also allows to automate feature engineering, manage feature versions, serve features to models, and document feature definitions. Every AI product of Synerise is based on a universal input format for all Machine Learning tasks, operating on raw events with zero information loss with real-time model updates. Everything is packaged in a self-service, low-code & automation platform with reusable components for developers, clients & partners and out-of-the-box products.

Lukasz Gawlik, the founder, and Managing Partner at Carpathian Partners, commented: "We are delighted to partner with Jarosław and the Synerise team on their journey to building a category leader in the behavioral big data and AI space. We remain impressed by how well-thought-out the architecture of the platform is. Combining a proprietary database technology, a global award-winning behavioral AI, and a low-code interface allows for an incredibly broad set of use cases applicable across multiple industries. This horizontal nature of Synerise, combined with its flexibility to address deep vertical big data problems, translates into a vast target addressable market opportunity for the company. With a deep bench of incredible technology talent and truly global ambitions, we believe Synerise has all the required ingredients to achieve and maintain hyper-growth in the coming years."
Cezary Pietrasik, the co-founder, and Venture Partner at Carpathian Partners, added: "The depth of the Synerise product is astounding. Even the biggest software firms in the US do not have such an elegant, unified, and highly-performant solution. We believe that the combination of unique scientific prowess of the platform, thoughtful go-to-market approach, and solid funding will allow Synerise to build a huge business in America. We plan to scale the company quickly in the United States." Cezary will become the new President of Synerise's US business with a mandate to lead the company's expansion in North America.

The Synerise team among the winners at the KDD Cup 2021

The global success of Polish engineers in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

Baidu, DeepMind, Synerise. Representatives of these companies were among the winners of the KDD Cup 2021. The competition, organized for 24 years, is considered by the technology industry to be one of the most prestigious AI and Machine Learning events in the world and is often called the World Championships in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

The competition was attended by representatives of the most technologically advanced companies and universities in the world. The results on June 17, 2021 were announced on Twitter by Jure Leskovec, entrepreneur and computer science professor at Stanford University, who is the chief scientist at Pinterest.

“Congratulations to the winning teams from @BaiduResearch, @DeepMind, @Synerise, Harbin and Dalian Institutes of Technology and USTC!,”

said Jure Laskovec - Chief Science Officer of Pinterest, Professor of Stanford University.

Synerise defeated teams from around the world, including specialists from Intel Labs (manufacturer of computer processors), OPPO Research Topology Lab (manufacturer of OnePlus and Oppo phones) and Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
“It is a great joy to stand on the podium with giants such as Baidu Research or Google Deep Mind. Much of the progress made in machine learning is made possible by the use of ever-increasing computing power. Technology giants are trying to outdo each other in the use of ever larger models with incredible capacity, but also very high training costs and a significant carbon footprint. At Synerise, we focus on a fundamental understanding of the mathematical phenomena underlying deep learning. Combined with engineering finesse, this allows us to compete with the best research centers in the world despite having only a fraction of the resources available to them,”

said Jacek Dąbrowski, Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, Synerise S.A.

KDD Cup (International Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Competition) is organized by ACM (American Computer Association), which is the most influential scientific and educational IT organization in the world.

Held since 1989, the KDD conference is the oldest and largest data mining event in the world. It is home to some of the first and most cited scientific articles in the fields that are now commonly known as "Big Data", "Data Science", and "Predictive Analytics." Innovations such as crowdsourcing, large-scale data science competitions, algorithms for personalizing advertisements (like Google), data mining (Facebook, LinkedIn) and recommendation systems (Netflix, Amazon, etc.) come largely from KDD.

In 2020, the KDD conference attracted over 3,900 leading researchers from both the commercial and university worlds. Among them were leading university researchers from Berkeley, Stanford, Oxford, Tsinghua who visited KDD to learn and demonstrate cutting-edge advances in Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Predictive Analytics, and Big Data. KDD is a pioneer of applied data science. KDD attendees come from the most powerful technology companies in the world such as Google, Alibaba, Facebook, Netflix, LinkedIn, Tencent, Microsoft, IBM, Spotify, and Amazon. The voices of state institutions such as NIH, NSF, DARPA are also important to the KDD community and representatives of these industries can be met during the conference.

“I think graph mining and modelling is one of the most important issues in the data mining community. The KDD Cup takes them to a higher level in terms of the scale of these problems and their diversity. [...] Hopefully, the competition will encourage the community to develop new techniques and see what algorithms work on large-scale data."

says Alex Beutel, KDD Cup Chair, Research Scientist & Team Leader at Google.

This year, almost 2,500 teams from around the world competed in 3 KDD Cup competition categories, of which three winners of a given category were awarded. Synerise starred in the most difficult of them, organized by Stanford University, Facebook AI, Google and Intel, among others.
“Our big dream has always been to compete with the biggest tech companies. The path we have chosen is bumpy, ambitious and uncompromising. We are dealing with the largest technology companies in the world, we want to win with knowledge, excellence and exclusivity of solutions supported by the latest scientific achievements, in particular in 3 market segments such as BigData, AI and automation."

adds Jarosław Królewski, President of Synerise.

Michał Daniluk, AI Research Scientist, Synerise SA says "With our work, we want to prove that our AI team can compete with innovation leaders from around the world. This is our third victory in this arena, which confirms that the global aspirations of Polish technology companies are perfectly justified. I hope that our success will inspire others. Scientists and engineers in the country to compete with the best in the world.”

The competition task was to predict the subject of scientific publications on the basis of edges contained in the heterogeneous graph of papers, citations, authors and scientific institutions. The graph of unprecedented size (~ 250 GB) contained 244,160,499 vertices of 3 types, connected by as many as 1,728,364,232 edges, which made it possible to verify the algorithms in terms of their readiness to operate on very large-scale data.

"Large heterogeneous graphs appear in many practical applications. The graph processed by us as part of the KDD Cup concerns academic publications, but data with a similar structure are also present in e-commerce (customer transaction graphs), large knowledge bases and document databases. processing this type of data therefore leads to a specific business advantage in improving the quality of recommendations and information retrieval. I am glad that data on this type of practical problems are increasingly appearing in competitions at leading conferences,"

explained Barbara Rychalska, AI Research Scientist, Synerise.

The Poles, including Jacek Dąbrowski, Michał Daniluk, Barbara Rychalska, and Konrad Gołuchowski, unlike most teams that improved existing algorithms, used proprietary machine learning methods: Cleora and EMDE. The methods developed by the Synerise team have so far allowed them to win the SIGIR Rakuten Data Challenge 2020 and WSDM Booking.com Data Challenge 2021 competitions. These methods are also a key element of the personalization system (including recommendations and search results) available to Synerise customers. The solution of the Polish team has already been published on the Stanford University website.

“KDD Cup competitions are an opportunity for our team to test and develop our technologies used in the company. It is satisfying that the algorithms developed for the needs of our products successfully compete with solutions prepared by technological giants. Competition with the best universities and companies like Baidu, Intel or Google gives additional motivation to continue working on improving our solutions," says Konrad Gołuchowski, AI Research Lead at Synerise.
Synerise.com is a Polish technology company that produces a Big Data and AI platform that allows users to process data in real time from various sources based on proprietary database systems and artificial intelligence algorithms as well as automated business scenario execution methods for segments such as retail, banking, telecommunications and e-commerce. Synerise among the winners of Twitter RecSys AI Challenge 2021.

Polish scientists and engineers have once again proved that consistent investment in their own IP in the field of artificial intelligence is gaining global recognition. This time, just behind the specialists from NIVIDIA - a company currently valued at 500 billion dollars - they were among the winners of the most prestigious competition in the world related to recommendation systems, organized by Twitter.

Recently the Polish company dominated the most prestigious and demanding events in the world of AI, gaining awards in competitions such as SIGIR Rakuten Data Challenge 2020, WSDM Booking.com AI Challenge 2020, KDD Cup 2021 and Twitter RecSys Challenge 2021.

"Having won once in a global competition which involves outstanding specialists and the best AI companies in the world, it may come as a surprise when it becomes a regular trend, appreciated by the global community. This accomplishment means that the Synerise team can now take on the greatest in the world, building its own, independent technologies, proven on a mass scale. The effects of our work are not only appreciated in scientific competitions, but are also components of our platform, which already supports over 150 billion purchasing transactions yearly. In AI and Big Data, it is difficult to create an MVP. Either you have the capacity to create algorithms based on real-time traffic or you do not - the pragmatism of AI solutions is a key issue - hence our investments in our own database systems. Many companies in Poland and our part of Europe build solutions based on Western technologies, and imitate them. We wanted to build something of our own from the very beginning " - Jarosław Królewski, CEO of Synerise.

Twitter RecSys AI Challenge 2021 is a competition organized by international research teams and Twitter specialists. The challenge is focused on advanced tasks in the field of recommendation systems and artificial intelligence. It attracts outstanding specialists from around the world.

The task set as part of the competition during RecSys2021, organized by the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), was to predict the user's reaction to a given tweet, based on the content and metadata of the tweet and a graph of historical user interactions. The probability of each of 4 possible interactions had to be predicted — like, retweet, comment and retweet with a comment.

“An additional challenge of the task was the limitations imposed on the model evaluation phase. The models had only 1 CPU core with a time limit of 24 hours for making predictions. GPU accelerators were not available in the test environment. The rules set by Twitter were aimed at eliminating solutions that require significant computing power, often too expensive for production applications." — Jacek Dąbrowski, Chief AI Officer w Synerise.

The dataset contained 1 billion tweets selected by Twitter in a manner that assumed inclusiveness and fairness. It included tweets in dozens of languages (including Japanese, Thai and Tagalog) and a diverse selection of users, from very popular authors to completely new users.

The month of June was exceptionally successful for Synerise. Together with Baidu and DeepMind, Polish scientists and engineers from Synerise were among the winners of the KDD Cup 2021. The competition, running for 24 years already, is considered by the technology industry to be one of the most prestigious AI and machine learning events in the world and is often called the World Championships in the field of artificial intelligence. Synerise defeated teams from around the world, including specialists from Intel (manufacturer of computer processors), OPPO Research Topology Lab (manufacturer of OnePlus iOppo phones) and Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Synerise.com is a Polish technology company that produces a Big Data and AI platform that allows users to process data in real time from various sources based on proprietary database systems, proprietary artificial intelligence algorithms as well as methods of automated execution of business scenarios for segments such as retail, banking, telecommunications and e-commerce. Synerise releases Cleora AI framework for ultra-fast embeddings in large graphs as open-source

Artificial Intelligence company Synerise, one of the fastest growing in CEE, known for their AI Growth Ecosystem is open sourcing Cleora AI project – a machine learning tool that enables faster and hyper-easy production of graph embeddings for big graphs. Synerise has been working on the project during last few years and has developed an easy-to-use framework that can be applied to any data sets without limitations.

Cleora is a general-purpose model for efficient, scalable learning of stable and inductive entity embeddings for heterogeneous relational data. The framework embeds entities in n-dimensional spherical spaces utilizing extremely fast, stable and iterative random projections, which allows for unparalleled performance and scalability. The tool can embed extremely large graphs & hypergraphs on a single machine.

Types of data which can be embedded include for example:

1. Heterogeneous directed and undirected graphs,

2. Heterogeneous undirected hypergraphs,

3. Text and other categorical array data,

4. Any combination of the above.

At Synerise we believe that sharing knowledge and showing innovation in the open-source Cleora framework will help many companies to develop amazing, faster solutions in the AI field. – Barbara Rychalska – AI Research Scientist at Synerise.

Key technical features of Cleora embeddings

The embeddings produced by Cleora are different from those produced by Node2vec, Word2vec, DeepWalk or other systems in this class by a number of key properties:

1. Efficiency - Cleora is two orders of magnitude faster than Node2Vec or DeepWalk,

2. Inductivity - as Cleora embeddings of an entity are defined only by interactions with other entities, vectors for new entities can be computed on-the-fly,

3. Updatability - refreshing a Cleora embedding for an entity is a very fast operation allowing for real-time updates without retraining,

4. Stability - all starting vectors for entities are deterministic, which means that Cleora embeddings on similar datasets will end up being similar. Methods like Word2vec, Node2vec or DeepWalk return different results with every run,

5. Cross-dataset compositionality - thanks to stability of Cleora embeddings, embeddings of the same entity on multiple datasets can be combined by averaging, yielding meaningful vectors,

6. Dim-wise independence - thanks to the process producing Cleora embeddings, every dimension is independent of others. This property allows for efficient and low-parameter method for combining multi-view embeddings with Conv1d layers,

7. Extreme parallelism and performance - Cleora is written in Rust utilizing thread-level parallelism for all calculations except input file loading. In practice this means that the embedding process is often faster than loading the input data.

The key usability features of Cleora embeddings from the end-user perspective can be summarized as:

1. Heterogeneous relational tables can be embedded without any artificial data pre-processing,

2. Mixed interaction and text data sets can be embedded with ease,

3. The cold start problem for new entities is easily solved,

4. Real-time updates of the embeddings do not require separate solutions,

5. Multi-view embeddings work out-of-the-box,

6. Incremental embeddings are stable with no need for re-alignment, rotations or other methods,

7. Extremely large data sets are supported and can be embedded within seconds/minutes.

Key competitive advantages of Cleora:

1. More than 197x faster than DeepWalk,

2. ~4x-8x faster than Pytorch-BigGraph depends on use case

3. Star expansion, clique expansion, and no expansion support for hypergraphs,

4. Quality of results outperforming or competitive with other embedding frameworks like PyTorch-BigGraph, GOSH, DeepWalk, LINE,

5. Can embed extremely large graphs & hypergraphs on a single machine.

Synerise it's positioning Cleora at the top together with tech giants. The quality of results outperform or are competitive with other embedding frameworks.  The scientific paper with the details will be published in 2 weeks.
The source code of the solution is already available on the
Synerise GitHub account.

A strong confirmation of the innovation of Cleora’s algorithms is that we use them as a part of the Synerise AI Growth Ecosystem. We’re leading the way not only in observing the reality happening around us, but in making a real contribution to science and in the process of creating it. - Jacek Dąbrowski - Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer at Synerise.

Cleora is used by Synerise for internal purposes, working together with Terrarium DB processing billions of datapoints in real-time and solving multi-modal challenges which involves graph data. Cleora algorithm is flexible and can be applied to different segments of the market, inter alia: retail, banking, and telco behavioral data at scale (billions of entities, trillions of interactions). Cleora is also used in input embeddings in EMDE (Efficient Manifold Density Estimation) that was also created by the Synerise Team.
